Aims:

  • Investigate a range of different business organisations
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of business processes
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of how businesses organisations are organised staffed, financed and controlled
  • Apply business knowledge to current issues in the economy

Year 10 - How the Course is organised:

  • Your Edexcel GCSE Business and Economics course is made up of 3 units to be studied over 2 years.
  • In Year 10 you will study Units 1 and 2.
  • In Year 11 Unit 5.

Year 9 – How the Course is organised:

  • Your new Edexcel GCSE Business course is made up of 2 themes to be studied over 3 years
  • In Year 9 and 10 you will study Theme 1
  • In Year 10 and 11 you will study Theme 2

Year 10 and Year 9 Course Content:

Within the course, you will focus on small businesses and learn about:

  • The types of businesses in our economy
  • How a business is structured
  • Where they obtain their finance
  • How they manage costs and revenue
  • How they market themselves
  • The procedures they use for employing staff
  • How economic conditions like taxation and interest rates affect a business

Skills you will develop:

  • Research skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Oral and written communication skills

Year 10 Assessment:

You will be assessed as follows:

  • Unit 1 – external examination which is 25% of the total mark
  • Unit 2 - Controlled Assessment which is 25% of the total mark
  • Unit 5 - external examination which is 50% of the total mark

Your final grade will be decided by adding together the marks for each unit.

Year 9 Assessment:

You will be assessed as follows:

  • Theme 1: Investigating Small Business (50% - written examination in Year 11)
  • Theme 2: Building a Business (50% written examination in Year 11)

Homework Expectations:

Homework will be set weekly to reinforce the work covered in class or to explore further business topics through research tasks.

Using ICT Support Learning:

You will be encouraged to use ICT for research tasks, presentation and analysis.

Essential Equipment:

You will be expected to have a pen, a green pen, highlighters, a pencil, a ruler and a calculator in class.

How best to support your daughter in this subject:

  • Discuss the issues raised in the lesson with your daughter
  • If you are working, discuss with her the work of such departments as Human Resources, Marketing and Finance
  • Monitor homework and coursework
