Overdue Book Policy

The library staff are keen for as many students as possible to read and enjoy our wonderful books.  Please encourage students to return their books on time so they can be borrowed by others.

Our policy for overdue books and lost items is as follows:

WEEK 1

Students will receive their first reminder via e-mail, once their library book is 7 days overdue

In addition, Year 7 and 8 will receive reminders in their library lessons via library staff.

WEEK 2

Students will receive a second reminder via e-mail when their books are 14 days overdue.

In addition, Year 7 and 8 will receive reminders in their library lessons via library staff.

WEEK 3

Students will receive their third reminder via email, when their books are 21 days overdue – they will be warned that, if their books are not returned that week, they will receive a detention.

In addition, Year 7 and 8 will receive reminders in their library lessons via library staff.

WEEK 4

Parents/Carers will be emailed requesting that they support their child in returning any overdue library books and giving notice of a detention if the book is not returned.

Year 7-11 will receive a pastoral detention (C2) if books remain a month or more overdue

Year 12-13 pastoral conversation with Head of Year or Head of Sixth Form.

WEEK 5

If an overdue book is not returned, students will be charged £10 for a replacement via ParentPay.  This also applies if a book is lost or damaged. The charge is inclusive of admin fees.  Please contact the Librarian if this is cause for concern or you have any queries relating to overdue books: e.gooding@sydenham.lewisham.sch.uk

In lieu of payment, the library accepts good quality, second-hand copies of books, to replace books that have been lost or damaged by a student,.

Tutors are notified, on a weekly basis, of any students in their tutor group with overdue books.  They in turn remind students of any overdue books on their accounts.

Whilst students have overdue books on their library account, they are not permitted to borrow any further items.

How to use the Library Webpage Accessit

We have a wonderful Library at Sydenham, which sits at the heart of the school and is where we nurture our pupils to embrace a love of reading. It’s packed full of books for all abilities and interests and is relevant and representative for all our students and staff.  We cover all genres of fiction as well as self-help, dyslexia friendly, revision, manga, non-fiction books.

Year 7 and Year 8 students benefit from weekly Library lesson where they read and discuss books to embed their reading for pleasure. All students are encouraged to have a book with them every day at school and to read at home at least 20 minutes a day.

We celebrate books with events, trips, competitions, author visits and collaborate with the other Lewisham Schools to hold the Lewisham Book Quiz and Book Award. We will be exploring ways to continue to offer these exciting actives to promote the love of reading.
