Overdue Book Policy

The library staff are keen for as many students as possible to read and enjoy our wonderful books. Please encourage students to return their books on time so they can be borrowed by others.

We particularly encourage Year 11 and Year 13 students to return any overdue books before they begin their exams. There are currently over 70 overdue books from these year groups - please do check whether you have any at home!

Our updated policy for overdue books and lost items is below. This reflects the recent changes to rewards and sanctions at Sydenham. School holidays and student absence will be taken into account when following these timescales.

Week 1 – Year 7 and 8 first reminder in library lesson. Year 9-13 first reminder via tutor.

Week 2 - Year 7-13 second reminder via tutor.

Week 3 – Year 7-13 third reminder and contact home.

Week 4 – Year 7-11 pastoral detention C2; Year 12-13 pastoral conversation with Head of Year or Head of 6th Form.

Week 5 – Item is logged as lost and students is charged for a replacement. Payment must be made via ParentPay.

How to use the Library Webpage Accessit

We have a wonderful Library at Sydenham, which sits at the heart of the school and is where we nurture our pupils to embrace a love of reading. It’s packed full of books for all abilities and interests and is relevant and representative for all our students and staff.  We cover all genres of fiction as well as self-help, dyslexia friendly, revision, manga, non-fiction books.

Year 7 and Year 8 students benefit from weekly Library lesson where they read and discuss books to embed their reading for pleasure. All students are encouraged to have a book with them every day at school and to read at home at least 20 minutes a day.

We celebrate books with events, trips, competitions, author visits and collaborate with the other Lewisham Schools to hold the Lewisham Book Quiz and Book Award. We will be exploring ways to continue to offer these exciting actives to promote the love of reading.
